In a post apocalyptic world, Perry would be better to travel with than Dick. Perry is not as cruel and violent as Dick. Dick is psychotic and Perry even says that he himself is a bit psychotic, which makes me think that he is really not crazy. He just cant control his emotions. Perry seems to have more of a heart than Dick. He actually felt bad after the murders. If I were to travel in a devastated world, I would want to be with someone who can protect me, but would also feel sympathy for me. Perry is also not as bad as he comes off to be. "But if the man was dead today it was none of Perry's doing; he'd never raised a hand against him." (Pg. 112) This quote proves that he is not as violent as he says he is.
Not only is Perry less violent than Dick, he would also be very helpful. He is very adventurous, which would help me get a better sense of life after the trauma of seeing so much destruction. He would also be able to occupy me by his musical talents. It would help get my mind off of the traumatic terrors. Since he is somewhat tough, he could kill animals for food, which will help us survive. Last but not least, he is very loyal because he stays with Dick, even though Dick is sometimes mean to him and very violent.
Living in a post apocalyptic world would be hard. Living in one with either Dick or Perry would make it even harder.
If I had to choose between one of the two, I would choose Perry. Perry is not a leader. He isn't very confident and is also very insane. I would choose him because living in an apocalypse would mean that there needs to be someone willing to do the grimy work. Being since I would be a leader role in the duo, I would use him to provide backup in dangerous situations and scavenge for goods. I don't kno exactly what the conditions of the apocalyps are, but I assume they are like the movie The Book of Eli. So being since there are still some people but not many, Perry would provide an excellent back up person for all the "crazy" tasks that would need to get done.
The main reason I would choose perry over dick is because Dick is sort of like a leader. But being since I would be the leader, having two similar leader mind sets would be very conflicting. So with Perry being a non-leader, it would be much easier to get along(minus the whole insane part). Having an companion is a important part of a survivor situation. Having someone else to talk to and make conversation with is such an important part of keeping your mind sane(even though he's crazy, I'd rather it be him than me).
All in all I personally wouldn't choose either of the two to be my companion in a post apocalyptic world, but being since I have to choose, I think that Perry is a much better choice for me, Maxx Kleiner.
If i had to live in a post-apocalyptic world, I would rather travel with Perry than with Dick.
Dick is a man with a big ego, a tendancy to flare up at the littlest of things (making him a hothead), he does not manage the resources he has wisely, and above all, does not listen to input from others. An example of dick's tendancy to flare up is when Dick yelled "Mr. Wells!", and then stabbed the fork into the table in a fit of fury in response to perry pointing out that there was still a connection to them and the murders (pg. 91, paragraphs 3 - 4). A great example of Dick not managing his resources Is when they go to mexico, after only a few weeks there dick manages to waste most of their money on liquor and women (pg. 123 paragraph 3). Because of all this i would not want to travel with dick because he is more of a liability than a help which is something you would definately not need in a post-apocalyptic world.
Lastly, one could tell that perry was the opposite of dick because instead of being overly agressive, he was passive. This is known to be true because perry always lets dick tell him what they are going to do. It is because of this quality that i could take control of the situation and deal with it as i see fit without having to worry about fighting him for control. Furthermore perry is more sensible and therefore would make reasonable judgement calls when absolutely nessisary, or at least suggest what he thought the best course of action to be. To conclude, perry does not waste his resources as foolishly and as willingly as dick Did which would make management of supplies easier when times are especially tough.
In conclusion, both of them are a bit insane, and from my experience, people who do not have their wits about them and who are not at least mostly sane, should not be in charge. I picked perry because he was easier to control, semi-level headed, and above all smart and reasonably sensible.
Despite the fact that Dick and Perry killed a whole family, I would rather travel with Dick if I had to live in a post-apocalyptic world. Dick is the person that feels like he knows everything and is in charge. Dick would be a good person to travel with in my case, because I would have no idea what was going on, and completely clueless too. If I have someone telling me what to do, it would be easier to survive.
Especially with Dick, sometimes he is wrong, but he always likes to think he is right about every decision he makes. So I would rather be with someone who is someone confident with their decisions at the time rather than someone who is as clueless as I might be.
If I was stranded in a post-apocalyptic world, I would much rather be traveling with Perry. Perry is mentally stable, however he has problems controlling his actions and can become an impulsive destructive individual, whereas Dick has an innate desire for violence and is extremely psychotic. Perry’s impulsive violent behavior arises from his poor upbringing, where nuns tried to drown him and his father nearly shot him and proceeded to kick him out of the house (p.136). Dick’s desire of violence is shown when he hits the dog walking down the side of the road on page 113, which he did ‘whenever the opportunity arose’ for no valid reason and praises himself for murdering an innocent animal, “Boy! We sure splattered him!” I would not be able to be around somebody like Dick, who is disgustingly violent towards innocent animals and other people, with an absolute disregard for anybody else’s feelings besides his own.
Perry would be a better person to be around than Dick because Dick could care less about anybody’s thoughts, problems or ideas; he was judgmental and rude. Whenever Perry tried to discuss his dreams with Dick, Dick would hardly pay attention and impatiently wait to hear the punchline of the story. Perry admitted that he would be embarrassed to even show Dick his letter from Willie Jay because he couldn’t deal with Dick’s scorn or ridicule. Perry was a pensive, intelligent person who would listen to you and be someone to discuss your thoughts with. If I was stuck in a post-apocalyptic world, I would have a surplus of thoughts and feelings to share and Perry would be a better person to be friends with and listen to than Dick. Perry was always analyzing dreams and contemplating premonitions in his head; if one was stranded in a post-apocalyptic world, he would want to be with an analytical, pensive person. Perry shows this solid quality reminiscing on his talks with Willie Jay when they were in prison and constantly re-reading the letters his sister and father sent him while he was behind bars.
After brutally murdering the Clutters, Dick is pigging out at a restaurant without a care in the world and Perry is unable to eat because of his worries and remorse about the horrible acts they just committed. Perry is a better person than Dick and actually has feelings, whereas Dick spends no time dwelling on the harm or sadness his actions may have caused other people. While traveling in a frightening post-apocalyptic world, I would want to be traveling with somebody who can look out for me and care about what I’m going through and Dick is not that type of person. As long as Dick is happy, he doesn’t bother to even think about what somebody near him is going through. Perry has the ability to care about people, however, his awful experiences in life outweigh the good ones, therefore, he has extremely skewed thoughts and perceptions of situations. Perry’s poor experiences have lead him to become the person he is and going through the apocalypse, another ‘poor experience’, would bring us closer together emotionally because we would be able to understand each other's hardships and survive in the post-apocalyptic world.
If I had to choose either Dick or Perry to travel with in a post apocalyptic world, i would choose to travel with Perry. I feel out of the two, I feel Perry would be the best choice. In my opinion Perry is a much calmer person, and easier to get along with. It is not an easy decision, each choice has its down falls but I think Perry would be easier to control and keep track of, rather then Dick. I feel Dick would try to take advantage of a traveling partner, and it would be very hard to trust him, and feel comfortable around him. Even with Perry, I would not feel safe or comfortable with Perry either, but I think more times then not, Perry is not the first to commit a violent act. Perry is a follower, not a leader and i feel that if traveling with someone who is potentially very dangerous, I would be better to be with someone who is more soft spoken like Perry.
I feel that traveling with Perry, would have greater potential of becoming a bit enjoyable, if one allowed themselves to get to know him , and be a little relaxed and except casual conversation. I think this would never happen with Dick, I think Dick would always seem violent and hostile. Dick is a leader, and that is another reason why i would not want to be with him. Since he is a leader and there would be no possible way of me being able to trust him, we would always butt heads, and there would be conflicts. I think with Perry, he would be easy to sway , and he would soon trust and except me and a leader and i would end up making most of the traveling decisions and this would be comforting. Out of the two choices i feel that choosing Perry as my traveling partner would be the smarter choice for me.
