I think that cohelos message to the reader is that one needs to have their mind set on fufilling their dream in order to achieve it.
My opinion stems from the series of incidents that occur around the main character named santiago that seem to have the function of either stopping or distracting him on his way to fufill his personal legend. One such incident occurs when Santiago first arrives in Tanger. He meets a local at a bar who coincidentally speaks spanish, and he tells the man that he needs a guide to get to the pyramids. Eventually santiago's "guide" runs off with all the money that he had saved up leaving him broke. However santiago gets back up on his feet, finds himself a job and months later continues on his quest to fufill his personal legend.
One other major incident that threatened to distract him from his quest to fufill his personal legend is when he falls in love with fatima. Santiago almost did stay with Fatima and almost forsook his personal legend. In the end, however, his desire to see his quest through to the end took hold and he set off to fufill his personal legend.
Despite all the distractions and hinderances Santiago faced throughout the entire course of this book santiago pulled through and fufilled his personal legend. This story shows through use of the main character that one can achieve all they set out to do but that they just need to stick with it and see it through to the end.

Throughout The Alchemist, Coelho stresses how important it is for one to follow their personal legend. On the journey to reach his own personal legend, Santiago is faced with many distractions that could take him off course from what his true legend is. Instead of allowing oneself to be sidetracked by the distractions that one faces, Coelho wants the readers of this novel to recognize that despite all of the detours of life, achieving one’s personal legend is reaching the grand destination. Coelho’s message is that reaching your main goals in life is what is most important and doing whatever it takes to get there is necessary in order to become the best version of yourself.
While Santiago was in Spain, the old man, who identified himself as the king of Salem, asked for a tenth of his sheep because of the information he offered Santiago. By giving up a tenth of one of his material possessions that he loved and relied upon, Santiago was pushing towards his personal legend by putting something he loved on the line to reach an even larger, more important goal: his personal legend. Santiago had to continue to work to earn the money he needed to make the journey to reach his treasure; he gave up precious time in order to obtain cash to travel to the pyramids. Coelho wants us to have the perseverance portrayed in Santiago’s character when it comes to reaching our goals. Despite losing all of his belongings twice to a conman when he first arrived in Tangier and the tribal warriors of the desert, Santiago did not allow his setbacks to keep him from his destination. We should not allow every setback to block us from achieving our most important desires. When trying to reach your personal legend, your heart needs to be the loudest voice, not the sounds of your setbacks.
Everyone has a personal legend, they need to follow. This is the main message i saw when i was reading The Alchemist. Coelho addressed many situations that could arise when one is following the path to their personal legend. He shows the reader the ways in which one can reach their personal legend.
Throughout the novel the reader follows Santiago on his journey to the treasure and the path of his personal legend. We see the challenges he faces and Coelho makes his character of Santiago easy to relate to for the reader. For example when he is robbed in the city, the reader can relate to this because at times everyone has felt like they had made a bad decision or lost something that would seem to hinder them from reaching their goals. Also when Santiago’s journey was postponed , and he needed to work in the crystal shop , doing something he did not enjoy. When this was taking place he became let down and felt like he would never reach his dreams of his personal legend , as if it became an impossible goal. Any reader can relate to this as well because at many times one can feel that the challenges they come across can be too over whelming to overcome to reach their goals, in the way Santiago had felt.
Overall Coelho makes a strong message in this novel about reaching ones personal legend and how important it can be. He addresses the challenged that can arise and how to over come them to make attaining ones personal legend a reachable goal. He explains how it can be important at times to put yourself first , when on the journey to find your personal legend. This novel shows the importance of creating oneself through the journey to their personal legend.
In the book, The Alcehmist, the author Paulo Coelho tries to convey a story of a boy on his journey to find his personal legend. This seems to be the main subject throughout the book.
Throughout the book there are many points where Coelho mentions the personal legend idea and that we should try to pursue our personal legends. Of course he does not say this directly, but there are many points in the book where he basically says just that. For example the are lines in the book that say things like "when you are truly in pursuit of your personal legend, the whole world conspires to help you fulfill your goal" and you can tell that he is trying to speak directly to the reader. The idea of personal legend is mentioned so frequently that you probably can see those words every other page somewhere.
Another idea that Coelho brings to the table is omens. This idea is mentioned just as much as personal legends are. Everything in the book that the boy looks at can potentially be an omen, but it is just the way that he has to see it.
Also universal language is talked about through the entire story. I would say that between finding his personal legend, Santiago's second main objective is to learn the universal language. Santiago often gets insights into discovering parts of the universal language and the author tries to show us how he discovers it.
All in all I think that the author is trying to get the reader to go out and pursue their personal legend and learn the universal language.

Coelho's main message to his readers is to emphasize the importance of having a personal legend. Coelho wants his readers to realize their personal legend and do what it takes to get to it. People who don't know what their personal legends are should not have any other person help them figure it out.
Another message Coelho wants to get to his readers is that fate is involved with finding one's personal legend. "When you want something, the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it." This quote supports Coelho's belief that fate is involved in finding a person's personal legend.
In The Alchemist, Santiago goes on a journey to find his personal legend. During his travels, he encounters many people on the way who delay him from reaching his goal. For example, he worked at the crystal merchant's store for a lot longer than he originally thought. Although, his time at the crystal shop was unexpected he helped the crystal merchant improve his business and earn enough money to go on his trip to Mecca. In addition Santiago was able to earn enough money to buy sheep to replace the ones that he lost.
Santiago's persistence and unyielding commitment to achieving his goal is the key message to the reader. Despite the fact that he was told his personal treasure was far away he knew that he was going to get there and achieve his long awaited goal. I am a big believer in the need for persistence and not giving up in order to accomplish ones goals.
